Book review of an old favorite is a cool angle: DId it age well? Nicely done. Conclusion: A good book is a good read anytime but the music it's based on may not resonate the same way.
It definitely made for a great adult read. I liked how there wasn't this big moral lesson baked in like they are in most of the modern YA books I have read (and stopped reading for this reason). In 'Girl', things happened, characters made mistakes, the story moved on, much like life. In modern YA, the protagonist has to take a stand, they have to be larger than life heroes usually advocating on behalf of an entire social group, and there has to be this good versus evil arc that always feels forced. In 'Girl' it's just life. That's what I looked for books as a teen, and what I look for in books as an adult, which is why I love memoir.
I was forced to watch a Marvel metaverse movie while waiting for my car to be serviced. The Scarlet Witch was Elizabeth Olsen and Dr. Strange was Cunerbatch. It was appalling. Luckily I wad reading Pablo Naruda's complete memoirs so my book saved me but I couldn't help feeling sorry for Olsen and Cumberbatch as they were the epitome of Good vs. Evil but compared to what? as Eddie Harris sang in Montreux years ago.
Books will be our salvation. Bad ones too. My sister gave me Orf when I was 13 about rock star who ultimately gets mutilated by his fans. Disgusting and nothing more than pulp but it lasted in me as a warning of our coming age.
Yeah new movies are close to unwatchable. I just figured I’m getting old but it seems to be a shared sentiment among many. Yes, books will be our salvation, as will old movies, even the real shitty ones! My son and I watched ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ again for the 15th time (he loves this movie) and as I always do when I watch this movie: I laugh to myself wondering who in the fuck though this movie was a good idea. It makes us laugh though every time it’s so absurd. Have a great weekend, Steve!
